What is a Transition Town?

A Transition Town recognises four things. Firstly, that life with dramatically lower energy consumption is inevitable, and that it's better to plan for it rather than be taken by surprise. Second, that our communities currently lack the resilience to handle the severe energy shocks that peak oil will bring. Third, that we have to act for ourselves and we have to act now. And lastly, that by unleashing the genius of the local community to creatively design our energy descent, we can build ways of living that are more connected, more enriching and that recognise the biological limits of our planet.

What is Peak Oil?

Peak oil is the point at which the amount of oil being pumped into world economies reaches a maximum. From that date onward, there's an inexorable decline.

What is the Transition Town Network?

The Transition Network's mission is to inspire, inform, support and train communities as they consider, adopt and implement a transition initiative. They're building a range of materials, training courses, events, tools and techniques, resources and a general support capability to help these communities.

How does it start?

Atransition initiative typically emerges within a community when there's a confluence of awareness of both peak oil and climate change, an eagerness to take action, and a desire to learn what other communities have done. Internet-based research for community solutions to the challenges ahead will eventually bring up examples of many of the transition initiatives that are underway around the UK. Alternatively, seeing a presentation on this subject can generate a phenomenal amount of latent energy in individuals and groups and can spark off a progression of community action leading to a transition initiative.

Who gets involved?

Anyone with something to contribute can participate. Once the initiative has formed a core team, two key processes kick off: mapping the community for existing green projects and raising awareness within the community.

HI : This is for every body who has signed the members list for Transition Town Maidenhead (TTM), we are a volunteer group and as a consequence, move slowly in regard to implementing changes in Maidenhead but we have been very successful in many regards.  Over the last month due to massive increase in fuel (heating oil is now 62p a liter over 100% increase in one year) and food prices, the whole world has woken up to what was the first phase of TTM, which was the awareness raising. It would now seem that every body should know that cheap oil is in decline, food prices are rising and climate change has only begun to make its self present. TTM will now enter this second phase:

1.         To secure land in the Maidenhead area to initially feed 200 families in the town.

Verona Rusted and Suzy Kirkwood along with others are hot on the trail of any spare land with in a good walk or easy cycle from Maidenhead, this may take some time, but is at the heart of any respectable transition town. Some people want to become members just for this and that's fine, please contact Verona and give her your support  vrusted@googlemail.com  or 01628418647

2.
To take part in the workshops for the development of Maidenhead, PROM ( to what extent we can be involved I am not sure, will keep you posted)

3. To apply for a grant that will help to set up a locally produced, artisan food outlet and restaurant, in the centre of Maidenhead. This is already happening and the two people who are involved are Ngaire Takano and Kath Pinto.  We will post fresh information soon.

Latest news: TTM
has had its official endorsement by the Transition Network. So Maidenhead is now an official Transition Town and part of a Global Community. Today after a year of work Maidenhead has been officially recognised as a Transition Town and can now take advantage of the global community network of ideas and shared experience of towns, villages, cities and islands around the world. The Transition Initiatives have formed to build resilient communities and enable the communities to prosper and have a better quality of life in the post-peak oil world. Check it out for yourselves www.transitionnetwork.org

Our criteria for recognition, was a committed committee, a program of events for awareness raising which we have been rolling out over the last 12 months for both small and large groups, an established constitution, a good grounding in all aspects of Peak Oil and climate change and its consequences and to offer support to other local green initiatives and transition groups in our part of the country. All of which has been happening on your door step. Our door is always open, please get in contact and kick off an initiative that you feel passionate about or just offer your support in any way you can, mobile 07787184706 or email
vinnie@transitionmaidenhead.org

Once again thank you for signing as a member to the website and please keep in touch and use the contact details above.

Many thanks

Get involved in the forum and have you say.

We are a community group that is starting to plan now for peak oil and life with dramatically lower energy consumption.

We need to act locally and unleash the genius of the Maidenhead community to:

* creatively design our energy descent
* build more connected, enriching ways of living
* recognise the biological limits of our planet
